Turning PUSH to PULL: Ways to filter through the masses of email generated by EVO

EVO sessions are marvelous events but they generate a lot of mail and it’s simply impossible to read it all.  This is a growing problem with email in general, and part of the multiliteracies course at http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com is to suggest ways where participants can learn to manage this in some systematic fashion.

One thing I’m doing is putting the feeds of groups I’m following in my feed reader.  The multilit Yahoo group is set up so that messages are public.  This means if you visit the group on the web at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/ without being logged in you will still be able to read the messages (that item in the sidebar will be blue hyperlinked; all others not).  More importantly, you can click on Messages and at the bottom of that page find an RSS feed.  You can ADD this in your Feed Reader and organize your reader so that all the feeds you can pick up in this way will appear in one place (under an EVO folder in Google Reader for example).  You’ll then see a listing with a couple of lines of what’s in the message, and you can then filter what you think might be important to read or not.

I’ve created a screencast using the Jing Project to illustrate how to do this:

View on screencast.com »

Moderators could help here.  If they have announcements they want to flag for group members, they could start the message prominently, with ANNOUNCEMENT or MODERATOR MESSAGE or WEEKLY ACTIVITIES.  Perhaps group participants could cooperate by NOT using upper case in their subject messages.  This might help participants filter through what is essential to read and what is merely enjoyable 😉

For groups where messages have not been made public, such as BaW-10, you can also get a similar listing but you have to go to the YGroup web page of that group to get it.

When you come across a URL of interest to the group you’re following you can tag it in Diigo or Delicious, and other group members will be able to find it.  There’s a link to several aggregators at the bottom right of our sidebar at http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com/.  For example, Web content tagged evomlit in Delicious is aggregated here: http://delicious.com/tag/evomlit.  If you know the common tag for other groups you can get their aggregated content by substiting that tag at the end of the URL; for example, http://delicious.com/tag/baw10.

Workshop more than worth just for this if it truly brings order to email chaos

Awesome screencast, thank you for this. The only problem you can’t solve is having the time to actually read what looks interesting.

Nina, you can say that again, by all means!

I like Posterous for the way it can help you manage a class.?? Right now people outside the class this blog is designed for are commenting on this blog, which is wonderful in this context. If you prefer a walled garden for your class though, you can password protect your blog so that only those with the password can even view it.?? This way the only people who would comment are those in the class (or whom you gave the password to).?? You can add your students to this blog so that they can post by email.?? That???s the best feature of this blog platform for beginning bloggers, all they have to do is email the blog and their posts will appear (with attachments, like photos, that will embed in the post).?? The blog owner can edit (or remove) ??them, but still another feature is that everyone in the class gets an email copy of the post.?? Now anyone can reply to that and the reply will be emailed to all participants and appear as a comment on the post, and again all participants get the comment in their email, where they can reply to it, and so on.?? <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal><span style=’font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; color:#1F497D’></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal><span style=’font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; color:#1F497D’>I???m thinking that this is a better way of getting conversations going in the classes where I teach, where students simply don???t participate in forums.?? Most blogs you can tick a box to be notified about comments. I don't know about the rest, but I have a Disqus account and use it for the comment system on one of my blogs, which means I am automatically subscribed to comments anytime I post a comment on any site that also has a Disqus system. I could probably disable that feature if I wanted to.

You’re right, in fact, dealing with the massive emails we get just make me feel lost and confused about what to do first, reply on what exactly, which events to attend, what other tools should be added. I hope I can make use of RSS as you’ve mentioned in your screencast. By the way, it’s well done and easy to follow; thank you so much for the sharing. #evomlit

I've been using the RSS strategy ~ not just with #evomlit but also with newsletters, blogs I follow other mailing lists. It really does make a difference in keeping up with and handling volume. I've never been happy with digest because of not having a clear, informative subject line and still having to skim through a long list made longer by repetition of unsnipped messages. I've been a resolute message trimmer, but trimming only works if most everyone in a group or on a list does it. Sometimes too, I just handle mail from the web ~ sparing both inbox and sent folder. &quot;Out of sight, out of mind&quot; is the main problem with both web and rss . Email management seems to be emerging as a (if not *the*) controlling idea, which is OK and my main resolution this year anyway. <br /><br />This week's theme, tagging, is also email related if you use gmail or subscribe to Disqus via gmail. OK, now I have to confess that every time I see &quot;evomlit&quot; my brain wants to read it as &quot;e-vomit&quot;<br /><br />#evomlit
